Character Name: Sugiyama Hinata
Title Name: Sugiyama Hinata
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Birthday: January 1st
Birthplace: Nagahama, Omi Province
Clan: Azai
Year: First
Track: Undecided
School Clubs: Chorus Club, Literature and Poetry Club
Dorm: Owari
Weapon: Uchigatana
Hair: Slightly past the chin length, styled, red with a black under layer
Eyes: Red, originally brown but changed due to the influence of his sacred relic
Build: Lithe
Voice: Soft, not quite masculine but defined enough to not be feminine.
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 132lbs
Casual Clothing/appearance: Hinata, when he's not in class and wearing the school uniform, tends to dress semi-formally. He's always found wearing some kind of nice button up shirt, formal slacks, and jacket combo in various colors. Usually with a pair of dress shoes or black boots that look nice. Due to his somewhat fashionable tastes he seldom is seen wearing something completely casual.)
Combat Clothing/appearance: While disliking combat Hinata still brings his sense of style to what he wears during it. Eschewing formal clothing for something more traditional (yet with a modern flare) Hinata dons the traditional clothing of a Japanese warrior of old. Black hakama pants, a black shitagi, and a rich dark purple obi sash form the basis of his mixture between old school and new school. What he adds to this though shows his touch of style. Instead of the traditional tabi socks and geta he adorns his feet with a more comfortable pair of socks over which he wears armored boots with a slight point to the toe. They feel very much like a European knight's armor but with a more Eastern design. Over his torso he wears a leather short jacket with a personal emblem emblazoned on the back. The jacket features armored platting at the shoulders and has smaller plates woven into the jacket itself providing some level of protection. The jacket has purple rope like chords decorating it at the shoulders and the ends near the back. Finally he wears armored arm guards, once more, in an Eastern style.
Inventory/accessories: Wallet, phone, his sacred relic charm, almost always carries his katana with him, misc. pocket junk.
Personality: Hinata is a quiet and soft spoken young man; impossibly kind and incapable of holding grudges or being resentful of anyone. He is tolerant of other ideals and beliefs other than his own, and believes that no one should ever be denied the right to defend those ideals and thoughts be it in battle or be it in a verbal argument. He tends to prefer solitude to the company of others due to being bad with people and painfully shy. Growing up alone without many kids his age he never really got a chance to socialize and its left him a bit socially stunted. Hinata is surprisingly domestic and enjoys cooking, cleaning, and doing traditionally feminine roles. That, combined with his poetic nature and passion for stargazing makes him seem a little bit girly; of course his rather soft voice doesn't help. If there was a word to sum him up it'd be gentle. He's always applying a light touch to everything as if he's afraid that the world around him will shatter.
Hinata's biggest problem though, of course, is his lack of confidence in himself. He, all too often, views himself as weak and worthless. He's blissfully unaware of just how good he actually is. He's not necessarily a gutless coward but his lonely upbringing has left him bereft of the courage to realize that he should honestly try to stand out more than he does. He's afraid of the limelight and making waves. A lot of his actions are colored by this fact. That, and his incredibly pure heart. For someone with the skills he has he hates bloodshed and hurting people. The very fact that he wields a sword and style designed to kill makes him sick to his stomach. Yet, perhaps, he realizes deep down that the reason he clings to it is he's secretly afraid that its the ONLY thing he's really good at?
Likes: Good food, quiet places, reading, the night time, the color red, music
Dislikes: Large crowds, noisy places, mornings (they're evil), hurting people, overcooked noodles, himself
Ambitions/Goals: Currently has none but that's subject to change
Habits/Mannerisms: Takes awkward pauses and stutters when he's talking to people he's unsure of)
Strengths: (3 to 5 things your character is good at. Must have equal weaknesses.)
- Swordsmanship: For as lacking in confidence as he is in his own skills Hinata is insanely talented and naturally gifted at swordsmanship, specifically the iai style schools of swordplay. From an early age he was drawn in by the spiritual aspects of the art and has since honed himself to being able to use it in combat to deadly effect.
- Heavenly Voice: Hinata's pretty good at singing which makes sense considering his naturally soft and melodic voice. Unlike his swordsmanship though singing is more of a hobby for him than a means of a living.
- Eye for Aesthetics: Hinata's got a keen eye for what looks good and what doesn't. Whether that applies to color coordination, art, or just whatever he's wearing he's usually pretty good at making it look good.
- No confidence: Hinata doesn't have a lot of faith in himself. He's not spineless or weak by any means but he tends to sell him self short and appear more timid than he actually is.
- Low Constitution: Hinata's always been a bit sickly and frail and that translates to not being able to take hits well. He bruises easily and isn't the most durable person in the world. Usually his sacred relic can offset this weakness of his but it can only do so much.
- Soft-Hearted: Hinata lacks the desire to kill which puts him at odds with the will of his sacred relic. It causes poor synchronization and further endangers his health whenever he uses it. If given the chance he will always show mercy and use non-lethal methods to defeat an enemy.

Original Owner: Ishida Mitsunari
Clan: Ishida, Toyotomi
History: A blunt, anti-social samurai of the late Sengoku period. Ishida Mitsunari is best known for being the commander of the Western army at the Battle of Sekigahara. He was also one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's daimyo as well a financial manager. He was on poor standing with many of his peers. While he historically died after the battle of Sekigahara legends state that Ieyasu showed him mercy and allowed him to live on in secret.
Sacred Item: Most assume that the elegant uchigatana that Hinata keeps with him at all times is the scared item that belonged to his ancestor. A good call but only partially right. The uchigatana itself, while well made and keen, is just an ordinary blade. However the magatama tied to the katana's kashira is the real sacred relic. Mitsunari's own blade once bore the same charm and while his katana has been broken, shattered, and destroyed this simple charm has survived the centuries and houses the samurai's spirit and will to fight on. Whatever the charm is made of its a metal not found in Japan, rare and durable. An oddity considering the material most magatama beads are made of. Its no wonder that it lasted while the blade it once belong to did not. The metal of the charm is of a silver with an almost black sheen to it. Its tied and held fast to Hinata's blade by a rich violet length of cloth.
Activate Ability 1: Josuketsueki (Blood Curse): Hinata's strength lies not in his physical prowess but in his precision. It could be said this skill was born both from Hinata's own training and Mitsunari's bloody death. The Blood Curse allows Hinata to enchant his blade via spilling his own blood on to it. For the duration of the "curse" his attacks no longer deal damage based on his physical strength but on his luck. The curse causes his blade to turn a blood red color. (4 post duration, 2 post cool down)
Activate Ability 2: Genseki (Rebuke): A counter-strike type ability. It focuses spirit energy into Hinata's sword causing the blade to glow blood red. Hinata sheaths his blade and waits for the opponent to strike. On the draw, Hinata intercepts the attack and the energy is released causing the opponent's attack to backlash and damage them in the same way it would have damaged Hinata. (4 post cool down).
Activate Ability 3: Jakuken (Wicked Blade): An ability which focuses spirit energy into Hinata's sword causing the blade to glow an eerie shade of red. From a drawing slash Hinata releases spray of blood like energy within close proximity to himself. The blood takes on a vaguely crescent moon shape and damages anything within the immediate area around him. The attack is no different than being cut by his own sword leaving nasty laceration wounds against the unwary. (6 post cool down)
Passive 1: Shitsuitaizen (Calmness Through Adversity): An interesting passive ability. Mitsunari was a shrewd man with a keen mind. He's blessed his descendant with the same in every day life but this passive adds an air of the supernatural to it. Hinata receives a 20% heightened resistance to being affected by things that alter his mental state in the heat of battle. Illusions, mental domination, charming effects, ect become less likely to work on him.
Passive 2: Meikongiri (Life Cutter): Mitsunari's was a keen blade designed not to brutally slaughter but to precisely strike with deadly efficiency. Meikongiri is a passive skill that embodies both that clean style and the thirst for blood the man's soul now embodies thanks to his tragic death. Meikongiri gives Hinata the ability to land critical strikes with ease, providing a boosted 40% chance to always land a critical. In addition to this whenever he lands a critical strike the damage he has taken heals by the same amount as the damage he's done. Visually, it looks like the opponent's blood is absorbed into the blade and in to him.
OverburstColor: Red with a violet tinge
Overburst Power:Matsuri Keiriku (Execution Festival): The embodiment of Mitsunari's death by beheading is a grisly technique designed to enact divine punishment via death. A sure-kill technique which marks the target with a symbol over their heart in the shape of a bloody moon. Hinata sheath's his blade like he would when performing the Genseki technique but instead of of his blade glowing, his overburst aura disappears completely save for wispy trails of energy that leak from the corners of his eyes. In a flash, he draws his blade and releases the stored energy in a single slash. It will always critical and is treated as if Josuketsueki was performed giving the blade the properties of the technique.
Support: Outside of support from Azai Nobuyori, Hinata is alone in the world
History: Hinata has always been, largely, alone in the world. Whether it was the day he was born or shortly after he had been left abandoned in the cold by his birth parents to die. They were probably poor and destitute people who didn't have the money to support a child. To this day Hinata doesn't harbor any ill-will towards them knowing that they had to have had a good reason for leaving him. Luckily Hinata was found by an elderly couple who had served as retainers for the Azai clan in their younger years. Their service awarded them a not inconsequentially sized home. These were the comfortable and warm living conditions in which Hinata grew up in this world. That being said his grandfather and grandmother didn't believe in sugarcoating things and told him from a young age what his circumstances were. At first he cried, anyone would, but even then he had a keen understanding of the world. There was no such thing as black and white, just varying shades of gray. He still asked to address his adoptive grandparents as his actual grandparents and it was something they happily agreed to.
From a time as early as the age six though Hinata frequently suffered from illness. He was forever bedridden with some sort of malady. For this reason it had been decided that it was best if he was home schooled instead of going to public school where his illness could worsen. Hinata's only friends growing up where his grandparents and his home tutors. The only world he knew where the walls of his home, being too sickly and frail to venture any further than the outer court yard of the sprawling complex. He always wondered why simple retainers would be allowed such a lavish home but eventually came to the decision that it wasn't worth asking. In time though his health improved enough that he could undergo strenuous tasks and, at the suggestion of his grandmother, took up swordplay. Hinata was a natural. He found a certain comfort in the blade. He took up the iai style primarily because of its spiritual practices but found that he had a gift for its combat effectiveness as well. It made his grandparents happy. Perhaps some day he could rise above his lowly status and become a personal retainer of the shogunate?
His grandmother didn't live to see the fulfillment of that dream. She died when he was ten years old from old age at the age of seventy-eight. He and his grandfather were grief stricken. Hinata actually took it far harder and his health took a turn for the worst. For almost a year and a half he struggled to survive. His medical bills were a drain on his grandfather and they ended up having to sell their home back to the Azai in order to pay for the bills. Despite all of this Hinata came out of it alive at least. He and his grandfather moved to Edo after that to be closer to better hospitals and medicine. Hinata continued to be home school and receive private tutelage for both scholastic and for his swordsmanship. Things were alright for a time.
Then his grandfather passed away. Now he was truly alone in the world. He had to learn to fend for himself and quickly. For the first time in his entire life he left the shelter of his home alone. Since moving to Edo he had gone out with his grandfather once or twice to see the city but he never went very far. Now though he was by himself. Perhaps a touch of fate had a hand in that day's events or perhaps it was sheer dumb luck? Whatever the case was Hinata found himself at a small antique shop far away from the hustle and bustle of the main city. Honestly the place looked shady but the owner was a kindly man. Hinata didn't have the money to buy anything at the shop but he just wanted to look and appreciate at all the fine works of the past. Something caught his eye though. Tucked away in a back corner of the shop was a small magatama charm made of an unusual material. The shop owner said he had found the charm buried in the dirt near his home and that, despite its unique construction, it held no monetary value. The owner let Hinata have it since he thought it was worthless. He was wrong, very wrong.
Hinata returned home with the charm and found it had a sort of warm and comforting presence to it. On a whim he tied it to his uchigatana, perhaps it would bring him some luck? Who knows right? Well as it turned out that charm was no ordinary charm but a sacred relic. Hinata was also no ordinary boy but the descendant of the person whom the charm belonged, Ishida Mitsunari. Those were the things he found out when the shogun's men came. Initially he thought they were there to take his life and went for his blade. Fortunately that misunderstanding was cleared up and he was informed of his new fate. Hinata took it surprisingly well. In fact, the boy was ecstatic over the idea of attending Japan's most prestigious school though he felt he was unworthy. Even after being assured up and down that he was (a lie of course given the true nature of the mandatory attendance) he still felt like he really didn't belong there. Due to his familial status he was placed in the care of the Azai clan and made to be their young future head's problem. An uncertain future now awaits the young Hinata at Edo Bugei.
