Gender: Male
Birthday: December 12
Birthplace: Edo
Clan: None
Year: Third
Track: Applied for Guard, but was ultimately forced to take the Warrior track.
School Clubs: Martial Arts. Visits the History Club near closing hours when there is little people around.
Dorm: Sagami
Weapon: Single Shot Pistol filled with a blank round, used mainly to threaten and scare off aggressors. For a connoisseur of guns, it is clear the thing is little more than a distraction.
Hair: Black, grows to one side and stands up slightly.
Eyes: Steel grey. The irises seem dull most of the time and he has a very intense stare.
Build: Athletic muscular
Voice: Countertenor with a mostly uninterested tone. Sounds remarkably like Takehito Koyasu.
Height: 5.91 feet
Weight: 149 pounds
Casual Clothing/appearance: A black martial arts vest without sleeves, he switches from using boots to wooden sandals. He is rarely seen like this, unless one were to enter his room unannounced.
Combat Clothing/appearance: Red half vest over a martial arts purple black one. Arms have light plates protecting them, covered in brown leather. He wears baggy pants usually meant for martial arts training and leather boots with metal soles used for heavy duty.
Inventory/accessories: Pocket watch, his Artifact, a picture of his family, poison vial and a mirror.
Personality: Kaito is best described as "rough around the edges". He's said to be an intimidating and aggressive young man, who enjoys the power his status as Scion gives him with the way he always carries his artifact around no matter where he goes. Though he is far from entirely alone, those who can call themselves his friends can attest there is an air of dread about him.
Kaito himself is a melancholic and frustrated young man prone to taking the fastest route out of conflict, which in most cases means avoiding it altogether by trying to intimidate his way out of a fight. He is very aware of what people say about him and ultimately considers the rumors well-deserved: He has a fair share of disdain for his status and views it as a means to an end. He will play along with his role of fearsome thug if it will save him from having meaningless confrontations with people interested in his abilities.
The way he sees it, as long as people consider him strong they won't mess with him, yet as long as they consider him a violent thug he will never be considered for the more political uses of his power.
Most of his demeanor leaves in plain view that the young man wants to be left alone, yet the fact he carries around a picture of his family and displays acts of kindness to those who don't mind his looks and brash ways reveals a need for company and acceptance. Perhaps that is the crux of his entire complex: He can not accept his role as Scion, or what it could mean for his identity. Is he to be just a redux of some ancient warlord? Does he really have any right to make his own luck anymore? Not likely. Not for someone as damaged.
He simply wants to escape his fate.
Likes: Hanafuda, tasty foods, pretty girls, sleeping, classic literature, rainy days and dogs.
Dislikes: Hastily made meals, aggressive people, unkind authorities, the concept of fate, his title as Kinslayer.
Ambitions/Goals: To become strong enough as to escape the fate of a Scion and possibly live out his days as a monk or hermit.
Habits/Mannerisms: *His cooking tastes wonderfully, yet looks very unappealing to the eye for some reason. Most infamous was an incident with a stray Shiba Inu whom he fed a purple Onigiri to the horror of onlookers, who believed he was poisoning the animal.
*He's fond of being accompanied by stray animals, whom he seems to attract. Reptiles seem to approach him eagerly as well.
*He's got an amazing resistance to alcohol and seems unable to become truly drunk no matter how hard he tries.
*He likes salty foods and though he dislikes his Artifact, he takes good care of it and constantly performs mantainance on the blade and staff whenever he has free time, which makes people think he cherishes his instrument of death.
*Due to the reputation he's gained as the Kinslayer and wielder of Uesugi Kenshin "The God of War's" artifact, he has become isolated, yet he remains with a penchant to avoid any type of confrontation and will be passive to most demands and courses of action. He speaks with a practiced Kansai accent that makes his image as some sort of violent delinquent even more prevalent.
*He seems to have a very soft spot for children and is very good with them. Incidentally whenever he's shown any sign of physical affection -pats, placing his hand on the shoulder or head- he seems to do so in a very paternal fashion for someone his age.
Strengths: (3 to 5 things your character is good at. Must have equal weaknesses.)
- Peak Physical Training: Raised within a dojo to fulfill his family's wishes for a Scion, he was extensively trained in hand to hand combat and defense techniques should he find himself weaponless. He had thorough sparring matches lasting several days with the dojo masters while being forbidden to use any kind of weapons to defend himself from their attacks. As such he has developed outstanding reflexes and resistance to pain. The many scars on his body are testament to his determination and effort to achieve this.
- Combat Ingenuity: Thanks to his distaste for using his Artifact, he has made it a point to remain effective without its use or minimizing its presence while still getting efficient results. Use of his environment such as dirt, sand or rocks, objects around him as improvised defense or weapons, he basically has no pride in regards to exclusively relying his martial arts prowess or Artifact. He can, and will fight dirty.
- Outstanding Reaction Time: While it's not so much as thinking fast the second he percieves an attack, he's been conditioned and trained to have a swift response to a sudden breach in his personal space and is able to detect the burst on enmity that precedes an attack. Basically, he would be able to dodge or parry in a general direction but he is not capable of actually assessing a situation in a split second like some masters. It's the equivalent of always having a finger on a gun's trigger.
- Denial: While he may be a Scion, should he ever have a choice to escape combat and avoid using his power, he will be very inclined to take it. It's less a problem of conviction and loyalty and more the fact he wishes to do something else with his life. As such he can be taken out as a threat if an acceptable agreement is struck and is unlikely to accept options that require him to undo such convenient decision.
- Survivor's Complex: For being in a career path that focuses on might in battle and the prospect of death, he takes the unorthodox resolution of not killing. While it may seem like a somewhat strange but acceptable moral code, it cripples his ability to fight properly if he feels or percieves his actions will endager unrelated people. Even in assassination missions he is known to capture the target instead. The fact he doesn't bypass murder by dismembering or permanently crippling a person reveals a tendency to avoid violence in an intrinsically violent environment, which renders a perpetual disadvantage against most foes.
- Incomplete: Reflecting on his dislike for the Naginata Artifact, he keeps it in its separate forms of a wakizashi and a staff, of which he primarily uses the non-lethal staff. Thus he is never truly in top shape regarding combat with his artifact, instead relying on his own skill and will to avoid lethality in his actions. In a world where Sacred Artifact users wield powers that go beyond that of any human and where life comes cheap, his resolve to keep the one thing that could give him an edge in an imperfect form gives him a perennial handicap.

History: The Dragon of Echigo. Avatar of Bishamonten. The God of War. The boy who lost his father to war, who was called to take back his heritage and defeat his brother. Time and time again did Kagetora Nagao meet enemies far stronger and managed to beat them. Never by his own volition, always answering someone's call. Incorporating the strength of his allies, the techniques he learned from those he faced, it was impossible to believe the boy was not meant for war. Indeed he had a talent for it. Enough to guarantee fame.
Yet nobody ever wondered if by turning into Uesugi Kenshin, Kagetora Nagao was truly lost.
He only ever kept a single heirloom from what he wrestled away from his brother: His mother's Naginata. It was the only memory he could recall of truly being fascinated by a weapon. Swords, lances and bows were after all variations for killing a man. Yet his mother's Naginata was different. It reminded him of what it felt like when at some point in his life he went to battle in order to protect, not to conquer. In time even that sentiment was lost and the weapon was assumed to be Kenshin's tool of choice.
A man called Takeda Shingen, so very similar and yet different from him, was the last to fall against that weapon. The rivals had danced around killing each other for far too long. Even if Kenshin did not bathe his Naginata in Shingen's blood, it marked a definite end to their long feud. Shingen would meet his end, and Kenshin would privately mourn the loss of a man so fascinating.
Enter Oda Nobunaga, a powerful warlord who threw Japan into a frenzy. He seemed unstoppable, yet his forces halted at his strategic and warfaring prowess. However, it was only fitting that the remnants of Kagetora would end Kenshin: Known to drown his regrets in alcohol, he succumbed to alcohol poisoning. Nobunaga was left unopposed and took the beloved heirloom, breaking the blade from the staff to symbolize his superior might over that of Kenshin.
The heirloom was to be disposed of but it fell into the hands of loyal servants, the Ryuken family. It was restored as two separate weapons, a wakizashi and a staff. In order to avoid it being found and regarded as a symbol of rebellion both were kept separate for the longest time. The wakizashi was kept by the Ryuken and used by a select few masters to carry out assassinations and take revenge for the death of their lord. The staff was kept by the buddhists monks of Bishamonten, who kept it stored with along other sacred relics to let the object bask in the blessing of their god and allow the wayward remnants of Kenshin's soul some solace.
Many years later, talks about The Second Coming of Oda Nobunaga sparked the flames of interest in many factions opposing the Tokugawa. Yet the Ryuken clan would never forget the grudge against the Nobunagas and they deemed that the time had come to once again reunite both relics and contest this supposed Scion of Nobunaga's claim to power, a thing that seemed all but inevitable.
So they began preparing a proper Scion worthy of Uesugi Kenshin's legacy.
Sacred Item: Haishatachi no Eikou: Glory of the Defeated--- A Naginata wielded by the original Uesugi Kenshin, it was broken by Oda Nobunaga after he succumbed to alcohol poisoning and left the mighty warlord the sole contestant to the land. Recovered by his family and carefully rebuilt as two weapons: The blade was made into a wakizashi while the Staff remained as such. A sublimation of the warrior's two main aspects: A monk and a killer. The wakizashi's hilt will become attached to one end of the staff and be wielded as such. Incidentally, Kaito rarely uses the combined weapon anymore.
Activate Ability 1: Harukage--- Named after the brother Kenshin was forced to slay as his first victory, Kaito uses the Wakizashi to perform a crescent slash that shoots forward at dazzling speed, applying damage equivalent to Kaito's STR to the target. Its maximum reach is 7 meters. Releases all Damage Stacks from the Staff as bonus damage to the enemy party in the form of a shockwave.
Activate Ability 2: Sadamitsu---Named after the friend of his deceased father who first introduced him into the world of warfare. Kaito will become empowered by the spirit of Kenshin's slain allies and heal damage equivalent to his base SO value and the amount of Damage Stacks on his Staff, releasing them. He can cast this ability on himself or any target he so chooses.
Activate Ability 3: Nobunaga---Named after the powerful warlord Kenshin faced and bested prior to his demise. After being damaged by an opponent's attack or ability, he will mirror the technique back to the enemy sans any effects such as poison, stun and any other sort of ailment that applies after damage. Releases all Damage Stacks from the Staff as bonus damage. Has a cooldown of 7 turns.
Passive 1: Kagetora---As one who attracted a life of bloodshed and violence, this tragic affinity was sublimated unto the Staff section of his Naginata. Applies a stack of bonus damage to the party each time he or an ally parries or dodges an attack. The stack is equivalent to a quarter of the enemy's total STR.
Passive 2: Shingen---Named after his legendary rival whom he would battle endlessly, this ability prevents a powerful attack from killing him or knocking him unconscious in a single blow by dispelling part of the damage, leaving him very weak. It has a cooldown of 3 turns.
OverburstColor: Aquamarine flames
Overburst Power: Bishamonten: End Of The World---Attaching the wakizashi to the staff, Kaito wields the revived naginata of Uesugi Kenshin in its original state and channels the spirit of the Avatar of Bishamonten. The warlord's killing intent manifests in the roar of an army that paralyzes the enemy in place, allowing Kaito to leap towards the target and unleash a flurry of stabs and strikes that punish both body and soul with aquamarine fury, dealing damage to HP and SP while ignoring END.
Support: *Ryuken Akito: Father and leader of the Ryuken clan. Has an estranged relationship with his son since the boy started refusing to use his Artifact, something the man can not comprehend as wielding such power can only be the highest honor. He successfully estranged Kaito from the rest of the clan in order to force him unto the path of becoming a bloodthirsty warrior, his ideal Scion.
*Ryuken Shigure: Mother and assassin for the Ryuken clan. Though participant of the idea of pitting the brothers against each other, she was not privy to the fact Akito had planned for only one of them to live. She has since stopped all contact with Kaito and refuses to speak of him, whom she believes to have murdered his brother to ensure his place as Scion.
*Ryuken Kishin: Younger brother who harbored an inferiority complex. The two of them were on very amicable terms and Kaito loved him very much. His assassination attempt was something he could never understand. His death took a heavy toll on him and he started constantly cleaning the blade of his weapon any chance he gets, as if compusively trying to wipe off his brother's blood.
History: "Uesugi Kenshin was the greatest warrior to ever live."
That was the mantra the Ryuken clan, his family, raised him to truly believe. It's remarkable how a child will heartfully accept teachings in a young age. A hero who could defeat foes stronger than him, who people relied on to defend them, that is how he grew up to think of Uesugi Kenshin. From the moment he could walk on two legs all his bedtime stories and education revolved around the many exploits and virtues of the man known as Uesugi Kenshin. He was born blessed by Bishamonten, God of War, slain his own brother for the good of his people and answered the call of battle whenever possible, for it was his fate. How could a man such as that not be great?
He was always eager to learn from his father and mother, their praise meant he was on his way to becoming a Scion, and becoming a Scion meant he would become like Uesugi Kenshin. There wasn't a single doubt on his mind: He would one day revive the legend of the Dragon of Echido and restore his dominion.
Of course he never really understood what any of those ideals meant. But they made everyone around him happy, so they were good.
His brother was born when Kaito was five years old and life started changing. Suddenly there was something more interesting and fun that 'the mission' and though his training left him little time, he would now slack off some times to play with him. Father never liked that, but Mother allowed it. Watching Kishin grow up unburdened by expectations awoke a feeling of need that he never noticed before: There was a world beyond the life of a Scion. Realizations like that have a tendency to come far too late.
At age 16 the test for wielding the Naginata was to take place. His father warned him from the moment he had turned 16, he should assume he was being tested. So he had no claims in fighting the hooded assassin that tried slitting his throat while he slept. It had to be a test: The killer knew how he fought, and eventually the fight led them to the chamber of the Artifact. He didn't even doubt and stabbed the assassin through the throat. He didn't particularly favor killing but he'd grown accustomed to it. Sometimes training sessions got out of hand, and he was no idiot: The life of a warrior was paved with people's blood.
He just never expected to unmask his brother, now a corpse. Why would he do such a thing? Was he supposed to show restraint? Had he failed?
"Kishin has coveted your position for some time now. There can only be one Scion. Should he have succeeded, you'd have been unworthy of it anyway. Rejoice, my son! The Artifact is yours! Just like Kenshin-dono, your brother will become the stepping stone in your ascension!"
It's always a heartbreaking moment, when you realize your parents are just as flawed as any other human being. Discovering yours are twisted and have made you twisted was akin to feeling a jagged thorn on his heart. He had succeeded in his dream of becoming a Scion and had made his father very proud, while his mother now despised being nearby him. The tale of his deed was all he could hear in the household and it was surprising how horrible it felt to be Uesugi Kenshin. He had killed his brother to ascertain his position. He had killed him because he got too close to the artifact. He'd killed him to test his resolve. He'd killed him because he himself had become a bloodthirsty warrior, and deemed him a worthy prey. Those were the reasons people gave for his actions. Was this how the God of War lived? This was the end of his dream, and it was a nightmare.
Instead of admiration, he was met with dread and fearful respect. He learned that nothing is farther from understanding a person than being wary of them. Even in school the stories about his brother's death seemed to follow him around. Yet he couldn't get rid of the Naginata. How could he? Not after all he'd endured, not after paying such a high price to wield it. It was a precious thing to own, paid for with something that dwarfed its worth.
His record in the school soon started to reflect his status as "Kinslayer Kaito". People avoided him, friends he'd previously had denied him and the few that remained now had caution in their eyes. He was sent to more dangerous missions, everybody assumed the young man was not only a proficient killer but would become problematic without proper challenges. The former was right, yes, but by now it was a trait Kaito despised. He grew tired of trying to deny his deed, or from making people less afraid of him. Instead he found himself safe from prying eyes and hypocritical friendships now that everyone assumed he was a beast awakened. He embraced the infamy, at least outwardly, and that helped him keep the undesirable people away.
He attained Third Year status after completing a mission intended for a team of 3. They were supposed to bring in the target alive for interrogation and his partners refused to cooperate with the Kinslayer or make use of his power thinking he would murder the target. In such discoordination, they were captured by the shinobi group and Kaito had to use his Artifact to battle the men for an entire day, tiring them out. The others managed to take the head prisoner and the mission was reported as a success thanks to tactical prowess of the team leader. Upon pointing out that no such prowess actually existed, Kaito incurred a rare case of anger in the young man and was challenged to a duel for his artifact. He won without using anything more than his staff, and though the boy was discharged from the hospital in a few days, there was still talk the only reason Kaito hadn't killed him was because he lusted for stronger prey. He applied to take courses as a Guard, but was heavily advised to focus on his Warrior qualities until he finally gave in.
At this point, he seems locked in the loop of fate, on his way to become a second Uesugi Kenshin. Talks about him being a secret blood successor, a reincarnation, all garbage he wishes people would stop saying. Though no longer in contact with his clan unless strictly necessary, he knows they have plans for him to contest the newly revived Oda clan should they become a threat. An empty goal disguised with words such as Honor and Duty. His days in Bugei School continue as the boy known as Kaito Ryuken grows more disenchanted with the life he leads.
Thus, the heir of the God of War lives wishing to do away with his fate.
